Jesus told Nicodemus that one must be "born again."  What does this mean?  Being born again represents a spiritual rebirth, accepting Jesus as the Messiah and receiving the Holy Spirit.
 
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
